What is a burner email?
A burner email is a throwaway address you use once and let go. It receives mail like any other address, but it isn't connected to your name, your contacts or your history, so when a website passes your details to marketers or leaks them in a breach, the only thing exposed is an address that no longer exists.
The name borrows from burner phones, and the idea is the same: use it for one job, then discard it. You may also see the same tool called a disposable email, throwaway email or temp mail. They're different names for the one thing, and OneTimeMail is all of them.
When a burner email is the right tool
Reach for a burner whenever a website wants your email address but doesn't really need you. Free trials that ask for an email before you can look around. PDF downloads and gated reports. Wi-Fi portals at airports and cafés. Competitions and giveaways. Marketplace listings where you'd rather not give strangers a way to find you. Newsletter sign-ups you only want for the welcome discount.
In each case the pattern is the same: the site needs to send you one email (a verification link, a code, a download) and everything after that is marketing. A burner address collects the one email you want and quietly absorbs the rest.
When you shouldn't use one
Don't use a burner for anything you'll need to log back into. Banking, MyGov and anything government-related, shopping accounts where you'll want order history or a password reset, and anything connected to work should all use an address you control permanently. Once a burner expires, there is no way to recover it, and no way to reset a password sent to it.
That's not a limitation to work around; it's the point. A burner is for relationships you don't intend to keep.
How the OneTimeMail burner works
The generator above creates a working address the moment the page loads, with a visible 10-minute timer. Anything sent to it, including attachments, appears in the inbox on this page in real time. When the timer runs out, the address and every message it received are permanently deleted. We don't ask who you are, and we don't keep anything to remember you by.
OneTimeMail is built and operated in Australia under straightforward privacy principles, with no shadowy ad networks attached and no ads inside your inbox.
Burner email vs email alias: which do you need?
An email alias (from services like SimpleLogin, or Gmail's plus-addressing trick) forwards mail to your real inbox and lasts forever. That makes aliases the better choice for accounts you want to keep long-term but organise separately: one alias per shop, say, so you can tell who leaked your address.
A burner is the better choice when you don't want a relationship at all: no forwarding to your real inbox, nothing to manage later, nothing left behind. For a one-off sign-up, the burner wins on simplicity; for an account you'll keep, use an alias instead. Honest answer: most people end up using both.
The tool above is the same engine as our temp mail generator. The home page adds a step-by-step guide, use cases and more answers.
